Generative AI & the Law

Brown University · Spring 2027

Generative AI has raised new questions of law, from the data collection, to the model training and output, to the harm it can cause. Courts apply existing legal doctrines to these technologies, yet how intellectual property and liability laws govern generative AI remains unsettled. This course will focus on the intellectual property and liability questions in AI, going beyond policy debates to focus on judicial precedent. Students will apply legal analysis to property, contract, and tort doctrines to the AI lifecycle, develop the skills to analyze opinions, and assess how courts may resolve ongoing and future disputes involving generative AI.

Course details, the syllabus, and enrollment information will be posted here later this year.

Please hold off from asking questions or requesting overrides until pre-registration begins for Spring 2027.
